I went the island not expecting to paint anything. Thought it was just sketching of villagers' faces and perhaps their houses. But it turned out that on top of the 4 pieces I did for the exhibition, I also spent 5 full days on this mural painted on corrugated aluminium surface that had to be cleaned prior to starting the work...Wanted to bring memories back for the sole person living there alone. All 5 siblings left for the mainland after they got married. The main person living there is single.
The matriarch is the main focus here and I wanted to portray and bring back memories of the time as if she is still alive. She passed on some few years back after she fell into the well one morning while drawing water. It was very tragic and the son up till this day still misses her, but he is much blessed with visits from volunteers and others who wanted to find out about what's so special about this house.
There were many activities lined up during the Pesta Ubin festival put up by the volunteers made up of people from diverse races and background who love this island a lot and wanted to do their bit in preserving the heritage of the island. As the house faces the sea, there were kayaking activities that bring you to the shores at other parts of the island and to the mangrove swamps to view nature at its best! We need to bring awareness to the mainlanders about the beauty and existence of this island via all these activities...But what a fulfilling feeling! Am so glad I did it! and it was also my first on such a surface!

I really like this one. You almost imagine that the guy at the window is real and all the others are painted. Great depth in this work of art
Belinda Low replied:
That 'guy' is the mother who died when she accidentally fell into the well one morning. It was real tragic. Thank you, Anthony!

Beautiful, heartfelt mural, Belinda, so kind and generous of you to adorn this home with representations of past happier times. Bless you! L&F
Belinda Low replied:
I do community work too Doug and sometimes, it's not all about the money. When I do such heritage walls, memories of my childhood come to play and it's a process for myself in my own life and art journey...Thanks v much for your support! :-D
