My most ambitious and challenging project to date. It was a task not accepted by me at first but it came round back to me one month later when an artist (who is not into murals) asked if I wanted to do this and recommended me not knowing I was approached first.
I had to do 4 sketches in order to satisfy their criteria and they wanted to check with the residents of the Home which scene they liked best and the backlane was chosen over the village (kampong). They wanted a display of the various races as most walls depict the Chinese who are a majority here. Indians, Malays were painted which are shared in another post on panoramic view. Time taken to complete this was exactly 11 full 8-hr weekend days which worked out to 88 hours including varnishing.
I have always loved painting heritage walls especially those where I had lived and been there as a child. The grandma is a metaphor of my maternal grandma and this is the second time she appeared on my wall work. The children at the windows - they represent my cousins whom I lived with when we were young. Families lived together then and it's multi-generational.
I wanted a wall where people especially the residents can resonate with when they were young. The time and period is around the late 60s to early 70s.
Shops like this selling biscuits in tins are fast disappearing or already gone. Details include Rediffusion which was the only form of entertainment before television came in 1965 when we gained independence from Malaysia. I remembered we used to sit around after dinner and listened to the many stories from the same story teller.
I miss those happy, carefree days and hope this wall brings yet another legacy to the next generations, and fond memories for many.
