Always wanted to do a hair salon for women. This is my first and on the wall. The other one was a barber for men at a wall at Apartment block 674. It took me 3.5 days on two weekends to finish this including varnishing on the last day.
The residents are all women and this centre is run by the Singapore Buddhist Welfare Services. There used to be 15 of them and now there are only 8 left in the centre. They are recruiting more if the applicants fit the criteria of staying here. This is the dining and the room next to it is the recreation space. They occupy the entire third floor.
Their program is regimented and is predictable. While painting in the morning, they would be doing their 'exercises' seated for an hour. This would be followed by early lunch (as they wake up very early around 4:30 am). Then they have their 2-hour rest and nap. The afternoon is open to activities like Bingo, Lotto, etc. They also have karaoke and a TV for entertainment.
Their meals re vegetarian and they do lead a healthy lifestyle.
The theme is '70s and I was a teenager then. I remember following my mom to the salon for her hair cut and perm. I try to recreate as much as I could remember.
Although the space is considered public space (as we see people walking by and even jogging), and you can actually see the walls from the outside as you walk by, permission has to be sought for visitors who want to take pictures or get closer to the dining area.
I am happy to be a part of this project and hope the work brings good and happy memories for them.
