This is my third instalment in a series of local women in the various cultures mainly of Chinese, Malay and Indian descent including the Eurasians. This was taken from a photograph of one of my friends whom I felt was the prettiest and most representative of this race when I was scouring for references. I thank her for willingly allowing me to use her photo. She was happy with the result though. The exhibition is scheduled in November in four different venues and there will performance in the form of singing this song hence a tribute to the yesteryears with the naming and painting of this work. Geylang is a place where it used to be the mainstay of mainly malays living there and is still is. The title is taken from an old malay folk song of the same name and suggests a place we come home to where flowers where the word geylang is taken from and insects abound.
Excerpt taken from MOE website by Ho Hui Ping, Programme Mgr of STAR
According to National Librarys website, this folk song is about the virtue of respect and tolerance in community living. Lets have a quick look at
the meaning of the lyrics and its musical structure.
The most common translation is that Gelang means
bracelet / ring and is related to the word Geylang, an
area in Singapore (e.g. in forums and childrens website).
But as is the case of folk songs, this translation is not entirely definitive. Id like to offer another reading here:
that Gelang is a species of creepers and sipaku is a
non-flowering fern of the species.
If we place this song within the genre of Malay traditional
music, the songs lyrics conform to the format of a Malay
pantun (a classic Malay poetic structure): strophic and
with a rhyme pattern of abab. It usually begins by making
references to nature or a local place. The opening lyrics
are often not logically connected to the rest of the song
(Matusky & Chopyak, 2001, p. 435). Once the beauty of
the pantun is appreciated, the musical meaning of the
song is clearer too!
