I painted this because the colours of the exterior and architecture caught my attention from afar when I was around the vicinity. I also saw this photo taken by Igor Prahin that I triggered me to paint this from the unusual angle this was captured. This house is one of the last surviving Chinese Villas in Little India. Built in 1900, this eight-room villa was built for the wife of a Chinese businessman by the name of Tan Teng Niah. Mr Tan owned a confectionery business and other smaller businesses and a rubber smokehouse. He was one of the non-Indian communities who prospered in Little India in the 1900s.
